So as many of you may or may not know, I used to watch tons of movies. I went through this whole phase in college where I tried to watch the 100 best movies from the 1900’s, I took a film appreciation class, with this amazing Australian stoner professor, and her specific forte was non-mainstream films, so I moved away from Citizen Kane, into the realm of David Lynch. After getting lost in Twin Peaks, my focus moved elsewhere, and I basically forgot about this Intro to Film class until last year.
On the closing Sunday of Coachella, I had the privilege to witness Roger Waters play “Darkside of the Moon? live with the movie playing in the background and a huge interactive stage show, but what I missed because I was to close to center, was the Wizard of Oz being projected on the roofs of tents as the music, this time played live, synced up perfectly.
Now Darkside is a great album, but I was born in 1982, and the Wizard of Oz is cool but what I wanted to know is are there any relevant CD’s that I may already know that sync up with movies. While thumbing through a coffee table book at a friends, I noticed a blurb comparing Public Enemy’s Fear of the Black Planet to the infamous Darkside. The most amazing part though, was the movie which PE “chose to sync their entire CD up to,” West Wide Story. Since that day I have spent countless hours on the web looking for reference to this, or maybe even a clip of the sync, but , my roommate found nothing, I found NOTHING. I did find news on other syncs here. So after a quick trip to the library at school, and an array of download sites, I was ready to peep this myself.
[Inhale, inhale, Cough, cough, Inhale]
So the movie started and as the Opening credit was fading I pushed play, and to my surprise as the cityscape began to change, the beat began to kick in. Now I could sit here and explain how this CD end up syncing almost perfectly to the movie, such as when Power to the People runs through as the city dance is paused, segregated, and then reconvenes, at “right about now”, or I could explain to you how while watching this movie you suddenly notice claps and snaps in the song that once seemed extraneous and elongated fades that added little to melodies, are now direct ties to the actions of the characters in the movie. Or I could even start to pull parallels between the meaning of this movie and the actual meaning behind Fear of the Black Planet, but as I said I could tell you all about it but instead I did some screen grabbing and you can check it out yourself.
Since this is the beginning wait there is silence for the firs few seconds
Peace-
NWK
